Heavy Equipment Operations

HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS: PROGRAM BRIEF

Catholic Charities has partnered with the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER), Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), New Mexico Workforce Connections of the Central Region (NMWFCC), and Goodwill Industries of New Mexico to offer qualifying students the NCCER Specialized Heavy Equipment Training. Come and start your career in the thriving labor market of Heavy Equipment Operations. Become part of a specialized group of people who have gained the discipline to perform a range of delicate tasks that require skillful concentration. The Heavy Equipment Operations Program is a comprehensive, industry-developed course that awards internationally-recognized certifications. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive dedicated support in gaining immediate employment in the field.

Requirements:
  • Students must take a pre-assessment upon registration to confirm their eligibility for adult education and training services.
  • Those who do not qualify will be referred to post-secondary programs that will better support their learning and industry training.
  • Those who are eligible for Catholic Charities educational services will also need to apply for training funds through the WIOA adult program.
  • Prospective trainees will receive support from both Catholic Charities personnel and NM Workforce career specialists in completing and submitting their funding application.

Heavy Equipment Operation Program Description:

Heavy equipment operators (HEO) not only work on regular construction building jobs, but also on infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, and ports, otherwise called non-building construction), and in mining and timber operations.
A trained and experienced equipment operator provides necessary skills for any project that requires moving and transporting heavy materials, or that demands any kind of earthmoving.

NCCER offers a three-level curriculum which will guide the trainee through modules covering each major piece of heavy equipment, as well as topics such as Civil Blueprint Reading, Soils, and Paving.

Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) are a vital part of NCCER's Curriculum development process. SMEs are construction and maintenance professionals who have journey-level experience and have experience teaching their trades to others.
