According to the 2020 Census, "Hard-to-count communities vary from city to city but are generally populations that historically have been under-counted and/or do not self-report as well as others. Examples of hard-to-count populations include persons of color, recent immigrants, young children, renters and low-income households."
In collaboration with other organizations, city, county and state, we created a group ABQ Refugee Coalition and we are launching a campaign to help raise awareness about the importance of responding to the 2020 Census and to assist the community with technology access to ensure that barriers such as language access, computer literacy and lack of technology availability is not an impediment to filling out the questionnaire. What Is the 2020 Census?
The count is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency. The 2020 Census counts the population in the United States and five U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands).
Who is required to respond?
The 2020 Census will count everyone living in the United States and five US territories including citizens and foreign citizens. This is a requirement by law, written in the Constitution.
How the Census benefits your community?
Federal funds, grants and support to states, counties and communities are based on population totals and breakdowns by sex, age, race and other factors. Your community benefits the most when the census counts everyone.
Why everyone should participate?
The federal government use the number of inhabitants in each city and state to allocate funds. If you don't fill out the Census, your community will not receive less funds.
If your community isn’t fully counted in the 2020 Census, you will miss out on political representation, on money for your children’s classrooms, on jobs and health care centers for the next 10 years.
