Week 2 -  Look, Learn, and Live Racial Justice

LEARN:
  • Race: Socially constructed classification of people based on their common ancestry, which usually includes a combination of physical and cultural traits. The notion of race can serve the members of a group to affirm their shared identity and to promote internal solidarity. In turn, the dominant segment of a society can use the notion of race to exclude or oppress racial minorities.
  • Racism: Unfair, discriminatory treatment of people based on their race, which results in social, political, and economic disadvantages. Expressions of racism include racial bias (prejudiced, negative, views about a race), exclusion, discrimination, injustice, and oppression. At the individual level, racism can be internalized or interpersonal. Internalized racism affects individuals who believe that certain races are inferior and others superior. Members of the oppressed racial groups may also internalize racist beliefs. Interpersonal racism refers to overt racial actions from some individuals against others, such as racial slurs or racially motivated violence. At the systemic level, racism can be institutional, when it operates within specific institutions, or structural, when it pervades the interconnected social, political, and economic structures of a whole society.

APRENDA:
