December is rich with holiday celebrations for many religions and cultures. This week’s edition of the “Look, Learn and Live Racial Justice” email series showcases the cultural celebration of Kwanzaa. Read on to learn more of the history, traditions and food connected with this celebration which begins on December 26th.

LEARN: Learn seven Swahili words defining the seven principles, or Nguzo Saba, of Kwanzaa.
December 26th - Umoja (unity)
December 27th - Kujichagulia (self-determination)
December 28th - Ujima (collective work and responsibility)
December 29th - Ujamaa (cooperative economics)
December 30th - Nia (purpose)
December 31st - Kuumba (creativity)
January 1st - Imani (faith)

During Kwanzaa, participants greet one another with “Habari gani” which is Kiswahili for “how are you/ how’s the news with you?” The response is “Umoja, habari gani.”
