Center For Immigration and Citizenship Legal Assistance

The Center for Immigration and Citizenship Legal Assistance  (CICLA) offers immigration representation in family-based immigration matters, consular processing, Deferred Action for Early Childhood Arrivals (DACA), permanent residence, and naturalization. One of the primary goals of the Center is to preserve and maintain family unity by assisting eligible individuals to petition for family members so that they may legally immigrate to the United States.

Another core mission of the Center is to assist individuals who have been the victim of domestic violence and sexual assault to obtain lawful status and permanent residency under the provisions of VAWA. Go to the VAWA Immigration Project page to learn more.

How can i volunteer at the border?
You can contact the following organizations regarding volunteering to help families and children at the border:
  • To learn more about volunteering with Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley's Humanitarian Respite Center, call them at 956-702-4088 or click here and fill out their volunteer interest form.
  • Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is seeking help from attorneys and community volunteers to provide assistance to families separated at the U.S. Mexico border. Click here to learn more about available opportunities and how to contact them directly.
  • The Kino Border Initiative in Nogales, AZ offers temporary shelter to immigrants crossing the border and provides supplies to families entering the United States from Mexico. They foster bi-national solidarity through direct humanitarian assistance and accompaniment of migrants. Click here to learn more about their volunteer needs and contact information.

Where Should I make monetary donations?
Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe currently does not have the capacity to provide direct assistance to those directly impacted by this crisis. However, the following organizations are able to provide assistance either at the border or to the children and families affected and are taking donations:
  • Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley's Humanitarian Respite Center
  • Catholic Charities USA's fundraiser for the 21 Catholic Charities agencies providing assistance to families and children who have been impacted by the family separation crisis
  • Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston

While Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe is unable to be directly involved in this situation, we do provide immigration and citizenship legal assistance throughout Albuquerque and Santa Fe as well as support to recently arrived refugees throughout the Albuquerque area. If you would like to support these local programs, you can go to our donation page and indicate either "Refugee Support" or "Immigration and Citizenship Legal Assistance" in the Donation Designation drop-down menu.
I'm interested in fostering children
Many generous individuals have expressed interest in providing foster care to the separated children. To find out more information about fostering children, please contact the following organizations:
  • USCCB Migration and Refugee Services
  • Catholic Charities of Fort Worth
  • Catholic Charities Community Services in Phoenix, AZ
New Mexico is not designated by the Office of Refugee Resettlement as a foster care placement state for migrant/refugee children due to our smaller population size, so it is unlikely that any of these children will be placed in New Mexico.
Where can I donate in-kind Items?
Unfortunately, Catholic Charities of Central New Mexico does not have the capacity to ship items to the border or to the nearby agencies providing assistance. There is also no way to donate items directly to children or parents at the border as the federal agencies are not accepting them.

Our agency can always use in-kind donations to help the families in need and recent migrants we serve in central New Mexico. Any in-kind donations received by Catholic Charities of Central New Mexico will be directed to the individuals and families we serve locally. You can learn more about our item donation needs here.
what are some ways i can help in new mexico?
Pray
Please pray both privately and publicly for the safety and well-being of these parents and children as well as a peaceful resolution that serves immigrants with dignity. You can find a prayer for migrant children here.
